1871
The Laeisz name figures among the founding companies of many shipping lines. In addition to the aforementioned HAPAG and DGzRS, Ferdinand Laeisz and his son Carl also hold shares in the following shipping companies: Hamburg-Süd, Adler-Linie, Kosmos, Hamburg-Calcutta-Linie, Vereinigte Bugsier- und Frachtschiffahrts-Gesellschaft, Woermann-Linie, Dampfschiffsreederei Gebrüder Schiller & Co, Hamburg-Brasilianische Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft, Hansa, Deutsch-Australische Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft, Deutsche Levante-Linie and the Deutsche Ostafrika-Linie.

In 1879, father and son make grandson Carl Ferdinand a partner in the company. Now, with three Laeisz generations working in the business, they form a highly active trio. Carl's son, Carl Ferdinand, born in 1853, is a bright, young man with a fine business acumen.

1890
At the end of the 19th century sailing ships and steamships are in equal use with the number of large sailing vessels on the decline. Yet not for the F. Laeisz shipping line whose famed sailing ships will continue to race around Cape Horn for another four decades. Even today, the "Flying P-Line" sailing ships are world-renowned.

The ultimate of the "Flying P Liner" sailing ships, the POTOSI, is a five-masted ship designed to withstand rough weather. It completes two round trips to Chile per year.
